KHAIRPUR (August 22 2007): The date-palm orchard owners in Khairpur district have said that the date crop in the district this year is very good and the ripening of the crop is half-way through with buyers from different parts of the country buying dates in good quantity at very good rates, reports UPP correspondent. It may be mentioned here that Khairpur district accounts for a major portion of the date crop in Pakistan.
The date-palm orchard said that the date crop this year is more juicy and sweet because of the good supply of water to the orchards. Date growers also dry the dates what is known as `Chuhara`, which has big demand in India and other countries.
The date-palm orchard owners claim that Khairpur alone produces more than 200,000 tonnes of dates annually and this year the production will be more because water supply has been excellent.
