Davao mango producers appeal for gov`t help

Davao mango producers are asking the government to assist them in coming up with marketing contracts. Ednar Dayanghirang, president of Davao Region Mango Contractors Association (Daremca) during the Club 888 Forum held at The Marco Polo Hotel on Wednesday, reiterated that they are appealing for more interventions from the government to promote the mango industry.

Other than helping them to organize themselves, he said they are also expecting that post harvest facilities like sorting machines and hot water treatment facilities will be made available to producers.

But in the meantime that these support are not yet available, Daremca he said is embarking on other strategy to promote and increase the per capita consumption of the fruit among Filipinos.

Dayanghirang said that in partnership with the Mindanao Fruit Council (MinFruit), Daremca will promote the Philippine mango as a food to local and international consumers through the The Mango Pavilion during the 7th Mindanao Culinary Festival.

He said they will embark on mango cooking contests, cooking demonstration and the display and sale of the different mango by-products. `We want to educate the consumers about mangoes as food where we expect in return that consumers eat more of our Philippine mango,` he said. He said the increase in consumption will benefit mango producers and growers as they could command better price.

He said they will continue the promotional endeavors towards the last quarter of 2007 in preparation for the mango season in 2008. From January to May, he said, the mango industry expects much bigger volume of better quality, healthier and sweet Philippine mangoes.

Also in partnership with agro-chemical sector of the mango industry he said they will be conducting Free Mango Seminar on October 6, 2007 in Davao City as part of their continuing commitment to provide producers the latest technology that will help improve their yield. He said Daremca by next year is targeting at least 20 percent in mango consumption in time for the mango season next year.
