Billiam von Roestenberg has been leasing many of the 700 apple trees in the Clintondale orchard at his Liberty View Farm for $50 per year. Now, he has donated the organically grown fall fruit crop from a number of trees to feed the homeless. Von Roestenberg is giving the fruit to feed needy families.
“We are actually donating 50 trees to the Queens Galley in Kingston and to Cornell Cooperative Extension ‘Plant a Row’,” he said. The Queens Galley soup kitchen serves 4,000 meals every month. He estimates his donation to be worth $2,500.
The Girl Scouts are picking the apples for packing and distribution to the needy. Von Roestenberg said he hopes his donation will entice other farms to donate some of their crops to feed the needy.
