Barranquilla – More than 50 years ago the family Carleti began with the production of fruits. Officially, the day of its 50th anniversary was the 6th of October. In the 50s, Mario Cairo a powerful grower of apples in Argentina and those days customer of the Carletis, recommended to avoid intermediaries and to start a packaging plant to trade the cherry production of the family located in Vista Flores (Argentina). They clearly understood the message and started a couple of years later.
From the production traded at the central market in Buenos Aires packed with rudimentary boxes “like bonbons” or plastic bags, there are only memories. Nowadays, Carleti is one of the main exporters of cherries from Argentina. The main market is the UK with almost 37% of quality production. Carleti understands very well these standards. Asia is a more recent market. They began exporting to Hong Kong 4 years ago where the price make the difference.
One of the main restrictions to get access in this market are the transport costs. There is also a cultural difference that any exporter has to deal with. However, for the Carletis there is no way to say “We can`t”. That is highlighted by Mr Ítalo Carleti (74), one of the three sons of Mr Vicente Carleti: “We are open minded businessmen. Our fathers always innovated. We travel a lot and these trips taught us that `We can`t` doesn`t exist”. Ricardo Carleti, from the third generation points out this innovation spirit. In fact, in 1989 the firm was the first installing an irrigation system at the region. As a result for the next campaign they expect to harvest for the first time a production of early cherries in the plantations of Panquehua (Las Heras).
Projections points out to a continuous innovation. Cherries have been always in the gourmet kitchen and now it is in a “boom”. For the Carletis it is clear that always there are open possibilities in this market such as frozen cherries for the European market or dried cherries for cereals. The idea is continuously innovate.
