Taiwan food fair held in Indonesian markets

A traveling fair featuring Taiwanese fruits and other agricultural products is being held at a number of supermarkets in Indonesia, introducing Taiwan`s produce to the southeast country`s upper middle class and Chinese-speaking groups, a spokesman for the event`s organizers said yesterday. The fair will visit 18 famous supermarkets in Indonesia, starting Saturday, including Grand Lucky Super Market, Farmers Market, Rezeki Super Market, and Ranch Market, in Indonesia`s Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Kepulauan Riau, and will run through Feb. 19, the spokesman said.

The exhibition displays a wide range of foods, including fresh fruits, organic produce, and processed food. Fruits such as Ponkan mandarin oranges, bell fruits, grapes, pineapples, persimmons, as well as fresh mushrooms, canned food, and all kinds of sauces have been included in the fair, the spokesman noted. Co-organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, Taiwan`s Chinese Organic Agricertification Association and the Shihkang township Farmers` Association in Taichung County, the event marks the beginning of the government`s plan to promote Taiwanese agricultural produce in ten potentially lucrative markets around the world, the spokesman said.

The other nine countries targeted by the government are Japan, South Korea, India, Russia, Brazil, Malaysia, Turkey, Vietnam, and Spain. Indonesia has a growing market because of its population of 240 million and growing salaries, the spokesman said, adding that foreign business people operating in Indonesia form a substantial market for higher quality food stuffs.
