In a meeting at Ministry of Commerce, Islamabad where all the stakeholders including PHDEC, USDA, DPP, MOC, PIA and leading mango growers and exporters were present. PIA announced that national carrier is resuming its flights to Chicago from 6th June 2013. This time PIA will operate twice a week. One flight will depart from Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore, while second flight will depart from Islamabad.
Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company being the representative of the horticulture sector has been advocating the resuming of Chicago flights to PIA on behalf of leading growers and exporters.
It is pertinent here to mention that with PHDEC active efforts as COOPERATOR, Pakistan was able to send first commercial consignment of mangoes to USA in 2010-2011. The closure of PIA flight Lahore-Barcelona-Chicago resulted as zero export of mangoes from Pakistan in 2012.
CEO PHDEC Mr. Bashir Hussain expressed his satisfaction on the efforts made by PHDEC for revival of the flights hoping that our mango growers and exporters would now be able to send mangoes to USA where Pakistani mangoes are liked by Asian expatriates.
