PHDEC TEAM VISITS BALOCHISTAN
Chief Executive Officer, Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company paid a three day visit to Quetta (April 08-10, 2014). He was accompanied by Senior Manager (Business Development & Projects). He held separate meetings with Additional Secretary Agriculture and Secretary Agriculture & Cooperatives, Government of Balochistan. The matters of mutual interest were discussed. In addition, the development projects funded by Export Development Fund, Ministry of Commerce were reviewed in detail and measures needed to streamline the bottlenecks in relation to their implementation/operation were identified. Subsequently, he participated in the meetings of Board of Directors of the concerned companies (Loralai Collection Point & Cold Storage (Pvt) Limited, Khuzdar Collection Point & Cold Storage (Pvt) Limited, Turbat Dates Processing Plant (Pvt) Limited and Quetta Valley Apple Grading Plant (Pvt) Limited), wherein matters related to various aspects of corporate and operational aspects were debated and resolved/cleared.
On April 09, 2014, the visiting team along-with Mr. Jamal Khan Jogezai, Member Board of Directors, PHDEC and Dr. Khair Muhammad visited various apples and grapes field in the district of Qilla Abdullah. The team was briefed about the progressive growth of the imported apple varieties which were performing very well. Team also saw the plantation of imported grapes’ varieties like Red Globe, Thomson Seedless, on trellises with drip irrigation in Majak area. The productivity performance was reported to be encouraging. It was observed that shortage of water is the impeding factor in apple growing. The Provincial Government may consider providing financial support to small farmers for tube-wells.
Mr. Bashir Hussain, Chief Executive, PHDEC also visited Quetta Chamber of Commerce & Industry and held inter-active discussions with the members. The team also met with President of the Chamber - Mr. Muhammad Asim Siddiqui and shared ideas for development of horticulture trade especially exports. Mr. Siddiqui informed that chamber was working on the proposal for establishment of Model Projects/Common Facility Centres for different fruits of Balochistan. Mr. Bashir assured him full technical support from PHDEC for any of the development activity in the horticulture sector. He also suggested that PHDEC may be provided a Facilitation Desk in the Chamber for information dissemination to the members on the potential of horticulture products – fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs.
During the deliberations, it was agreed that awareness / projection of activities of PHDEC needs to be improved for the benefit of the stakeholders in the province. Mr. Jamal Khan Jogezai, Member Board of Directors, PHDEC and Dr. Khair Muhammad Kakar were also present. Afterwards, PHDEC team left for Lahore.
